Meteorites are not a very common thing to find, and by no means do they grow on trees. In
fact they are pieces of rocky material that have fallen from space. These meteorites are a commodity, that if
you have one, it is special and you are probably going to keep it, and if you do not, you may
want to purchase one. Because the odds are you are not going to just find one laying on the ground.
Now if you are going to purchase a meteorite, be wary, there are countless numbers
of people advertising the sale of meteorites on the internet. So where are all these meteorites coming from?
Well, the answer to that is, space, but that is if all of the meteorites for sale are the genuine thing. What
is to stop some person from finding a bunch of rocks that look like meteorites and selling
them to the uneducated public? Well, not much. Fortunately you can do some things to help yourself get a genuine meteorite.
Look for
meteors that are for sale, that can be referenced with the database of meteorites that the
Meteoritical Society keeps. Also, if you buy from someone who is in the
science field, they may have a greater probability of having the real thing. And if
meteorites are something of their general interest, and life-hobbies or work, they are going to be passionate
enough not to dupe the consumer, you.
Now as far as purchasing the meteorite of your desires, try to look for a decent
price. Unfortunately, people who are selling meteorites realize that not everything comes from space, and the
prices they set reflect it. The type of meteorite you are trying to purchase also plays a role in the price. The more common chondite meteorites usually
sell for less, and rarer iron meteorites usually fetch an outlandish top dollar. Prices can range from
hundreds of dollars for a small hand size meteorite, to thousands of dollars for samples that still are not any
bigger than a volleyball.
